3 guests today – and a little live-radio frabbajabba due to a phone line explosion with HausGuest #3 – made for an EXCITING show:
One thing I did NOT get to: My favorite story of the day
Hollywood in Toto with Christian Toto
Entertainment is one of my favorite NONpolitical topics and Christian is the PERFECT guy with which to have a conversation about it.
We talked about the following films:
- Now You See Me 2 (epic fail)
- Central Intelligence (VERY good)
- The Conjuring 2 (good with big scares, but not as good as the original
- Zootopia (very good – especially Jason Bateman – but with some messages/topics that may require some follow-up conversation with kiddos)
If you haven’t done so, make sure to bookmark Hollywood in Toto RIGHT now.
Here’s the isolated HiT segment:
HausGuest #2 – David Daley
David is the editor-in-chief of Salon, among many other things, and came on to discuss his new book, “Rat F**KED – How the Democrats Won the Presidency but Lost America“:
The book’s core premise: The explosive account of how Republican legislators and political operatives fundamentally rigged our American democracy through redistricting.
An extremely interesting discussion about gerrymandering occurred. I pointed out my particular explanation for the phenomenon (characteristic of BOTH sides of the political aisle): the extraordinary importance of state and federal government in our lives, and the corresponding power and money at stake as a result, creative gigantic incentives for playing with voting precincts.
For the sake of keeping things friendly, I did NOT ask the first question that came to my mind when reading the summary of the book: Is there any doubt that had Obama’s failures not resulted in a sweeping interest in the election of Republicans nationwide in 2010 and 2012 and if the Democrats had racked up solid majorities, would they have done any different?
HausGuest #2 – Larry Pratt
Larry is the Executive Director of Gun Owners of America and I was REALLY excited to talk to him – especially in the context of the competing narratives in the wake of the Orlando shooting. Unfortunately, the phone systems at Larry’s office died JUST before the segment began and connecting with him was difficult. Then, after we were able to connect, the power itself failed and that killed the call.
We did have opportunity for a short discussion about gun rights and illogical position of those wishing to ban arms.
Fortunately, after the show, I arranged to have Larry back on the show next week. After this short little segment, I can assure you that it will be a VERY welcome return!
Thank you for reading and listening!
