Yes, Donald Trump won 7 states, that is true. And Cruz grabbed 3 while Rubio managed only 1.
But digging into the details yields a picture that is very different than the headlines read. It’s also very different than what Trump is saying, as well.
Here’s the most recent results via the New York Times:
Note that Trump picked up 237 delegates to Cruz’s 209. That is HARDLY an epic victory.
Also, when considering the vote totals themselves, take a look at this:
- Donald Trump: 2, 952,514
- Ted Cruz: 2,670,775
- Marco Rubio: 1,713,918
Again, not an epic blow out.
Another thing to note, comparing this campaign season to 2012, Romney won 238 delegates on Super Tuesday and his overall count at this same point in the race was 393. Obviously, this contest has broken all of the molds, but it’s clear to say that Trump is not besting the field in a manner commensurate to his claims.
For conservatives who are opposed to a Trump candidacy, this fight is not over. Not even close.
