Ariana Rowlands is the President of the College Republicans at the University of California Irvine and she has been embroiled in a big free-speech controversy just a few hundred yards from my house.
She and her campus group hosted a talk by Milo Yiannopoulos in June and then announced plans to have him back again later this year. Then the fit hit the shan. The Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at the school
clutched his pearls announced that the group would be forbidden from sponsoring ANY events for the 2016/2017 school year.
Yiannopoulos published a hilarious article, mocking the university’s response:
The Orange Country Register published an article about the blow up:
After a huge amount of blowback, the school backed off (a little bit) and requested that the group file a formal appeal. They refused. The school then backed off completely.
Breitbart published an article about the whole affair:
Here’s what Ariana said in response:
“This complete revocation of the suspension placed on College Republicans is a big win for free speech and for free assembly, but also a victory for other clubs that go through the same type of administrative bias such as the Jewish, Bernie Sanders, and conservative clubs on our campus.
Our mission however has not changed. We want to make sure that similar incidents never happen again and we will still be fighting for a resolution by UC Regents to condemn discrimination against students based on political philosophy. College Republicans at UCI looks forward to addressing the UC Regents in person at one of their meetings.”
Last week Rowlands was on Yiannopoulos’ podcast and they chatted about the series of events:
